Have you spotted security labels in schools? Security labels, sometimes called asset labels, barcode labels, equipment tags or security tags can be found in UK schools, academies, colleges and universities.

They are attached to items (known as assets) of high value, such as tablets, computers and microscopes. They are used to link each asset to a database that holds more information about each individual asset – called an asset register.

The asset register will state the age, value and owner of each asset. For example, in a large school with several different departments, the ‘owner’ will relate to a certain department which may have purchased the asset from its allocated budget.

Many schools like to label or ‘tag’ their assets because it makes assets easier to find if they get lost or misplaced, and easier to lend out or share. Academies, in particular, will share resources with other schools in the Academy Trust. Broken, expired or missing assets can be recorded in the register. Insurance companies will ask to see the Asset Register if insurance claims are made.

Schools can select different security label types. The most basic is easily ordered online. This label can hold text, a logo, a barcode and/or consecutive numbering. A QR code option is also available. A QR code (Quick Response Codes) can be read by a smart phone or scanner and are simply a type of two-dimensional barcode. The devices that can read a QR code connect directly to texts, emails, websites, phone numbers and recorded information.
