Security Labels for Education
School security is expensive and necessary. Schools, colleges, academies and universities know that they need to try to prevent theft from happening. But how?
The Cost of Theft
The cost of theft can be measured in many ways in education. Firstly, financially; a stolen school laptop means that the school has just lost hundreds of pounds in a valuable resource that will probably never be replaced. Secondly, the laptop may have been used by several learners over time, so affecting more students’ learning. Thirdly, theft always causes disruption. It takes time to investigate and creates bad feeling.
UK schools today are very safe places. The security is tight and access into a school is closely monitored and controlled. Many schools operate cctv systems internally and externally which helps to work as a deterrent to theft and vandalism.
However, many schools still lose too many resource! Which are most at risk? S578l9maller items of IT equipment such as cameras, hand-held devices, tablets and laptops.
Does your school (or department) register their assets?
Does your school (or department) register their assets? Each school should hold an Inventory of Assets. This ‘working document’ should be regularly updated and show the current worth of equipment. Schools often link this to their record for Electrical Inspection as many of the assets will appear in both places. New assets can be added to the inventory and broken or obsolete assets deleted. This document should be stored safely and centrally and can be used as evidence for insurance claims.
Most schools now operate an asset management system of some kind. In simple terms, this is a system where all assets (over a particular value) are recorded and given a barcode, QR code or number. When scanned (most schools now use a smartphone scanner) the code will reveal details about the particular asset.
Three advantages of adding a barcode to an asset:
1. The barcode will be printed with the school name, logo and contact details. It is a deterrent to theft. Our labels are designed to look good and stick firmly.
2. Once scanned the code will give information about the asset. This may include ownership, age and expiry. This has become particularly useful for Academy Trusts where a lot of learning resources are shared.
3. The security asset label provides an easy reference for staff to log-in and log-out equipment for each lesson, working in a similar way to a library system.
